Why does decaf get such a bad rep? What makes ours the best decaf coffee?

What's the deal with decaf hate?

Coffee is beloved by billions of people worldwide. Not only that, but we love caffeine. Caffeine wakes us up and energizes us, and can even make us happier (Healthline). We’re so dedicated to our caffeinated brew, that we can’t believe people out there enjoy decaf! Also, many decaf coffees on the market are bland with a bitter aftertaste (Quartz). So, with those two concerns, the decaf hate train began.

But is all the hate necessary? Of course not! Many people cannot have any caffeine as part of their diet for both medical and personal reasons.

At Verena Street, we know providing the highest quality decaffeinated coffee is just as important as our other fully caffeinated blends. We want all of our customers to feel included and be able to enjoy delicious, smooth and flavorful coffee. So, what makes our decaf so special?

The Swiss Water Process

Our beans undergo a natural decaffeination process via the Swiss Water Process. This ensures a full-bodied flavor without the chemical aftertaste common to most decaf coffees. We feel you should be able to cut the caffeine without sacrificing any flavor. Although more costly than alternative procedures, this natural process ensures the same quality, taste and aroma that you expect from fully-caffeinated Verena Street® varieties. Let’s dive deeper into the step-by-step process.

1. GCE is Created

First, green coffee beans are soaked in pure fresh water, creating GCE. GCE is green coffee extract.

2. Prep Time

Next, the green coffee beans are cleaned and soaked to prep for the moisture level that’s ideal for decaffeination. In this step, all beans are cleaned, so all dirt and dust are removed.

3. Caffeine Removal

For the next 8-10 hours, the GCE is circulated with the green beans until 99.9% of the caffeine is removed from the green coffee and into the GCE. Then, using a carbon filter system, the caffeine is removed from the GCE. Very scientific stuff!

4. GCE is Refreshed

Throughout this process, the GCE is constantly refreshed. This means that GCE can be recycled and used for multiple batches of green coffee beans.

5. Time to Enjoy!

Sweet success! The decaf coffee is now ready to be dried off, bagged, shipped, and enjoyed by the consumer. Taking your first sip of Swiss Water coffee will change any doubts you had about decaf.

Testimonials

Don’t take our word for it, hear what our customers have to say about our decaf coffee.

This coffee lives up to its promise. I’ve tried decaf from several of the big-name brands and this one beats them hands down. If you didn’t know it was decaf, you wouldn’t be able to tell. The flavor is what you’d expect from a caffeinated blend and it doesn’t have the processed/chemical taste that a lot of decaf coffees do. – Ryan, reviewing Sunday Drive

The coffee is phenomenal! Usually when ordering decaf coffee, it winds up being weak tasting. Mississippi Grogg has a wonderful flavor and they are right you can drink it without cream. Most flavored coffees you buy have a bitter aftertaste. This does not. Definitely will be buying more and trying your other decaf coffees. – Corve reviewing Mississippi Grogg Decaf

We have recently been forced to drink decaf coffee and have tried many different kinds, but none come close to this one. It's so smooth and no bitter taste. We don't mind drinking decaf anymore. Now it's a treat! – Jan reviewing Rocking Chair
